Anyone who has ever owned a motorbike will understand what Colin Maxwell means when he talks about freedom.

A motorcycle enthusiast from the age of 16, Mr Maxwell spends most of his time these days fixing bikes at his business, Wollongong City Motorcycle Repairs.

But he hasn't forgotten what drew him to them in the first place.

"It's about freedom, the exhilaration of going where you want to go, doing what you want to do.

"It is also a bit of rebellion...thumbing your nose at the establishment."

These days Mr Maxwell's 15 year old son, Wayne is picking up where his dad left off.

He is involved in motorbike racing at a junior level and hopes to one day become a professional racer.

"Wayne's loved bikes since before he could crawl. They were his thing."

Lucky for Wayne that his dad is in the business of fixing bikes.

"I love to work on my son's bikes. I just get in there and do what needs to be done. That part of it is definitely a dream job," he said.

After eight years at his current establishment, Wollongong City Motorcycle Repairs is moving premises to a new more efficient workshop at 106 Gipps Street.

But he doesn't expect any drop in business.

With over 30 years fixing bikes, Mr Maxwell has the experience to offer a quality service on all makes of Japanese and BMW motorcycles.

"We make sure the bike is repaired properly so there is no need to have it repaired time and time again."
